Natural Remedy for flu- The Go To Cold and Flu Solution for Pregnant Women.

As if the 9th month of pregnancy isn’t miserable enough, I found myself suffering from all symptoms of flu.  It started with a sore throat and a bad cough or perhaps it started with sore muscles but I wouldn’t know how to differentiate sore muscles from aches associated with a 6-pound baby invading my body.  All I know was I felt like crap and I needed A Natural remedy for flu. One that worked quick…really quick since the weekend was fast approaching and my 4-year-old would never understand that Mom is sick when school is out for the weekend.

I was lucky enough to have my homebirth midwife, Angelina,  visit me for a prenatal care visit at the start of my flu misery. She seemed unbothered by the fact that I couldn’t speak between coughs or that snot was free-flowing from my nose. “Why didn’t you call me when you first felt a symptom, we could’ve knocked this out sooner,” She said in her usual worry-free tone.

Angelina is a naturalpathic caregiver and typically uses a holistic approach with her clients, so I was surprised to hear her present a choice for flu remedy.  “Do you want me to give you a natural solution or an over-the-counter medicinal way out?” she asked.  For me, there is power in choice. Especially as a pregnant African American woman, where choices in care are often eliminated or ignored.  “Well, I think I will take your natural remedy first please,” I replied,  proud of my open mind despite my visible misery.

She went on to explain how happy she was that I chose the natural remedy for flu, saying that often time over-the-counter meds only mask the symptoms instead of actually remedying the problem. Next came her list of fruits, herbs, and spices that she wanted me to go out and get. “You will be better in a day, ” she confidently claimed.

A day?! That sounded like music to my ears. “Great because this mom doesn’t have the time or energy to be sick.” That same day I went to the market and picked up all of the ingredients that I didn’t already have in the house. It was inexpensive and easy.   After drinking it I felt my congestion begin to clear immediately. I took her advice on drinking lots of coconut water and a dose of Vitamin C. I eliminated all sugar and sugary juice and by the next morning, I felt like new.

Natural Flu Remedy

This recipe is great for pregnant women or anyone who just want a natural way to heal from cold or flu.  I recommend you  hydrate with coconut water all day and eliminate sugar while you are sick 

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 15 minutes
Total Time 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 lemon Thinly sliced with Rhine on
  • 1 lime Thinly sliced with Rhine on
  • 1 inch ginger chopped
  • 3 Garlic Cloves chopped
  • 16 oz water boiling
  • 1 tbsp turmeric ground
  • 1 tbsp honey raw

Instructions

  1. Bring 16 oz of water to boil. 

  2. Add lemon, lime, ginger, garlic cloves to boiling water

  3. Cook for 15 minutes then strain the water into a cup or mason jar

  4. Add turmeric and honey to your strained water

  5. Drink slowly.
